There can be multiple reasons, however I came across this verse recently and believe may be the number one reason: Hos 4:6 “(6) My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.”
Not sure you agree? Consider for a moment, can you defend your faith? Do you know more of God now then last week, month, year? Do you DO the Word of God or merely hear it? God has a lifestyle Christians are to live, but be honest, how many of us are living the Word of God? Answers to these and other questions reflect our attitude towards God as referred to in the verse above; if God is not a central part of our decisions and being lived out regularly in our lives, not just at church on Sunday, and we don’t know about God and His ways for our time, money, what we watch or listen to, than maybe, just maybe, we are suffering for our faith, but for the wrong reason: Matt 5:13 “(13) Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” Please don’t take God’s warning in Hosea 4:6 lightly, He is a Christian’s Father and will take us to the woodshed, if we refuse to repeat.
Thankfully, God is good and merciful and we still have hope! 2Chr 7:14 “(14) If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
